Founded in 1921 to honour South African soldiers from World War I, the Comrades is the world's oldest and largest ultramarathon. Pietermaritzburg serves as the headquarters for the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA), which operates out of Comrades House on Comrades Marathon Road.
