As per the Department for Business and Trade, the National Living Wage for welders aged 21 and over in United Kingdom is £12.80 per hour as of 1 April 2026. Welders working overtime beyond 40 hours per week must receive 1.5 times the hourly rate under the Working Time Regulations 1998. This rate applies to all employed welders regardless of contract type.

As per the Home Office, overseas welders must hold a Skilled Worker visa sponsored by a licensed UK employer with a minimum salary of £38,700 or the going rate for welders as of 2026. The visa application requires a Certificate of Sponsorship issued after 6 April 2026 and costs £719 for applications made outside the UK. Dependants can join only if the main applicant earns above £38,700.

As per the Education and Skills Funding Agency, welders must hold a Level 3 Welding and Fabrication qualification or equivalent completed through an apprenticeship by 2026. A minimum of 2 years post-qualification experience in coded welding processes such as TIG or MIG is mandatory for most roles. Employers verify this via the Apprenticeship Certificates England database.

As per HM Revenue and Customs, applicants must provide a valid passport, National Insurance number, and welding qualification certificates such as BS EN ISO 9606 when applying. Right to work proof via a share code from the UKVI account is required before starting employment in 2026. Employers must retain copies for 2 years after employment ends.
