As per the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, the minimum wage for security guards in New Zealand is NZ$24.50 per hour as of 1 April 2026. Security guards working more than 40 hours per week must receive overtime at 1.5 times the hourly rate. This rate applies to all workers aged 16 and over with no exceptions for the role.

As per Immigration New Zealand, applicants from outside NZ require an Accredited Employer Work Visa valid for up to 3 years to work as a security guard. The job must be on the Green List or meet median wage thresholds of NZ$29.66 per hour from 2026. Applications must include a job offer from an accredited employer before arrival.

As per the Private Security Personnel Licensing Authority, every security guard must hold a current Certificate of Approval issued by NZ Police before starting work. The certificate costs NZ$130 for 1 year or NZ$260 for 3 years and requires a criminal record check plus training completion by 30 June 2026. No one may work without this licence.

As per the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, applicants must provide a CV, Certificate of Approval, proof of NZQA Level 3 security qualification, and photo ID. For visa holders, a valid passport and work visa copy are also required. Applications are submitted directly to employers with all documents verified before the interview stage.
