As per the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, the adult minimum wage for restaurant roles such as waitstaff and kitchen hands is NZ$24.80 per hour from 1 April 2026. This applies to all employees aged 16 and over with no separate youth rate after 2024 changes. Employers must also pay time-and-a-half for hours worked on public holidays.

As per Immigration New Zealand, the job offer must pay at least NZ$29.66 per hour or NZ$61,812 per year for the Accredited Employer Work Visa in 2026. The employer must hold current accreditation and the role must be on the Green List or meet median wage requirements. Applications require a job offer letter and employment agreement before visa submission.

Food safety certification such as the NZQA Unit Standard 167 or equivalent is mandatory for all kitchen roles. Employers verify experience during the hiring process.

As per Immigration New Zealand, applicants need a valid passport, current CV, two recent references, and proof of right to work such as a visa or citizenship certificate. For roles involving alcohol service, a valid Manager's Certificate or General Manager's Certificate under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 must be provided within 10 working days of starting.
