Job Description
The Welding & Fabrication Mechanical Technician is responsible for performing a wide range of skilled tasks across multiple trades, including certified welding, pipefitting, copper brazing and soldering, and mechanical system installations. This technician supports various departments (HVAC, Plumbing, and Controls) and plays a critical role in the field and shop fabrication of piping and structural components. This role demands a high level of versatility, technical ability, and teamwork, aligning with APS’s mission of delivering high-quality solutions and excellent customer service through accountability and servant leadership.

The Welding & Fabrication Mechanical Technician works under the supervision of a Project Manager and is expected to be adaptable, safety-focused, and collaborative across all divisions as workload demands fluctuate.
• Technicians are dispatched directly from their home to the work site and will work with minimal supervision.Overtime is available.

Daily Readiness & Professional Conduct
• Report to assigned job sites on time, prepared, and ready to work each day.
• Represent APS professionally at all job sites through appearance, conduct, and communication.
• Follow direction from the Project Manager and field leadership regarding welding, piping, fabrication, and mechanical work.

Welding & Fabrication
• Perform MIG and Stick welding on structural steel, supports, and process piping systems in accordance with certification requirements and project specifications (including pressure-rated systems up to 300 PSI).
• Fabricate steel supports, brackets, frames, and custom assemblies in the shop or onsite based on drawings or field layout.
• Braze and soft solder copper piping systems to code and application requirements.
• Execute shop-based and field-based fabrication to support HVAC equipment, piping systems, and structural needs.

Pipefitting & Mechanical Installation
• Fit and install steel, copper, and PVC piping systems accurately and safely.
• Assist with installation and positioning of mechanical equipment including chillers, boilers, RTUs, split systems, fan coil units (FCUs), pumps, and related components.
• Perform field layout, alignment, and preparation to ensure systems are installed correctly the first time.
• Identify mechanical or piping issues in the field and communicate repair or replacement recommendations to the Project Manager.

Cross-Division Support
• Provide skilled labor support to HVAC, Plumbing, and Controls teams when project workload requires flexibility.
• Adapt to shifting priorities and assist other divisions to ensure overall project and company success.

Quality Control & Problem Solving
• Inspect completed work for accuracy, quality, and code compliance, correcting deficiencies as needed.
• Diagnose mechanical or piping issues and support the development of safe, effective solutions.
• Maintain a mindset of continuous improvement, seeking better, safer, and more efficient ways to perform work.

Documentation & Process Compliance
• Follow APS operational processes for work execution, documentation, and job closeout to support accurate billing and project tracking.
• Accurately document work performed, materials used, and time spent.
• Communicate material usage, shortages, returns, or warranty-related items clearly and promptly.

Customer & Team Communication
• Communicate professionally with customers when onsite, escalating technical questions or recommendations through the Project Manager.
• Work effectively both independently and as part of a team to complete work safely, timely, and without defects.
• Assist less experienced team members when appropriate, supporting a culture of teamwork and learning.

Safety & Physical Requirements
• Follow all APS safety policies and OSHA regulations at all times.
• Use proper PPE and safe lifting, rigging, and handling practices.
• Ability to lift and carry materials in excess of 50 lbs with assistance or proper lifting equipment.
• Work in varied environments including rooftops, confined spaces, fabrication shops, and outdoor conditions in all weather.
• May require occasional overtime or extended hours to meet project deadlines.
