As per the Department of Employment and Labour, the minimum wage for drivers in South Africa is R32.45 per hour from 1 March 2026 under the National Minimum Wage Act. Drivers working more than 45 hours per week must receive overtime pay at 1.5 times the hourly rate. This applies to all Code 08, 10 and 14 licence holders in the road freight and passenger sectors.

As per the Department of Employment and Labour, all drivers of vehicles over 3 500 kg or carrying passengers for reward must hold a valid Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) renewed every five years. Applicants must submit a valid South African ID, medical certificate and police clearance at any Driving Licence Testing Centre. Without a PrDP, employment contracts are invalid under the National Road Traffic Act.

As per the Department of Employment and Labour, applicants must submit a certified copy of ID, valid driving licence with PrDP, proof of residence, and a completed Z83 form or online profile on the ESSA system. Applications are processed within 14 working days at labour centres nationwide. No application fee is charged for registration on the public employment database.

As per the Department of Employment and Labour, drivers may work a maximum of 45 ordinary hours per week with at least 36 consecutive hours of rest. Annual leave is 15 working days after the first year of employment, plus 10 public holidays and sick leave of 30 days over a three-year cycle. Night shift drivers receive an additional R4.50 per hour allowance from March 2026.
